Live COVID-19 Updates
Update: 6/14/2021 Hawaii enters Tier 4
At this time, HMA Ka Lama Iki will continue to abide by all Hawaii State lawas and restrictions within tier 4.
TRAVEL 2/15/21
- Please avoid unnecessary travel. If your child has traveled outside the state of Hawaii, you are required to notify principal@kalamaiki.org.
- Travel in and out of the State of Hawaii should adhere to the State of Hawaii mandates, policies, and measures for safety requirements at all times due to the pandemic.
- Approval to return to school, after travel is completed, is necessary. The State of Hawaii mandates a 14-day quarantine OR, as of October 15th, a negative COVID-19 test result. Parents will need to provide the school with a second, follow up COVID test 5-7 days following all travel.
Safety Guidelines
- Small class sizes: Ka Lama Iki is very lucky to have a smaller student population. Fortunately, the school is rather isolated and is approved to go forward with plans to reopen safely in accordance to CDC guidelines. Ka Lama Iki continues to monitor the changing reports and will remain vigilant in implementing the most recent guidelines for student safety. If any changes occur pertaining to the rising cases, we will reassess and inform.
- Temperatures: When your child arrives on campus-- if no fever OR symptoms of both your child and your family are presented—students will receive a stamp or sticker and can go to class. Teachers will also have contactless hand-held thermometers in each classroom. Students who are late, past 8:05, will visit the office and be scanned by our office kiosk. All visitors to the school must have their temperature scanned by the office kiosk. (see FAQs below)
- Cohorts: Due to COVID-19 concerns, Ka Lama Iki has restructured quite a bit to keep your child as SAFE as possible in our ‘ohana "bubbles". Students in each classroom will be in a cohort together all day--and until restrictions are lifted, will be quite isolated from other classrooms for safety reasons. We are excited to plan Zoom-in time with other classrooms to encourage socialization.
- SIX feet: Students will remain 6 feet apart in class/at lunch and will be permitted to take off their masks when seated safely. Each child will have a "mask bag" where they can safely take them off and put them in a sanitary place instead of letting them fall on the floor, etc. Anytime a student needs to transition around the room or students are working in groups within 3 feet--they will need to wear a mask.
- Teachers/staff: All adults will wear a mask/shield at all times throughout the day when six feet of distance cannot be maintained until the CDC guidelines are updated. Our staff will be very intentional on keeping both themselves and their students safe at all costs.
- Hand washing will be a serious skill this year. Handwashing will occur quite frequently. Students will wash their hands with soap and water when entering in the morning, before eating, from outside play, or periodically if working in small groups, etc.
- Lunch time/Recess: Each class will have their own spaces and times for lunch and recess away from other classes. Kitchen staff will prepare all food in 'to-go' containers. Home lunches are always welcome.
- Physical Education: Students will NOT have to wear a mask during outdoor play as recommended by the CDC, while maintaining socially distant. We have altered our PE curriculum to follow CDC guidelines and though students will be able to bring in their own volleyballs, etc. students in each class will have their own set of equipment. If you would like your child to wear a clear face shield during PE, those are more than welcome.
- Water: Fill stations have been purchased for each classroom-- water fountains will be turned off. Only the classroom bubble will be allowed to refill at the class station--it will be disinfected between use.
- School Supplies: School supplies will not be shared-- we will have extra items in case your child runs low.
- Online: Parents who have chosen the remote (online) option for the first few weeks of school will be expected to keep times according to the class schedule. Ka Lama Iki understands that some families have older family members at home, new babies, and/or compromised immune systems. Meeting the needs of these students and families are just as much a priority as face-to-face learning opportunities. COVID is overwhelming, and Ka Lama Iki continues to respect each parent's decision pertaining to the return to school. Students can still socialize, ask questions in live time, and receive tutoring as needed during remote learning.
